Description
January 2015 and we had had a heavy dump of snow overnight up in the hills of the nearby Peak District. Heading up through Glossop I saw that the Snake Pass ahead of me was closed to traffic because of the snow. Having had a set of winter boots put on my four wheel drive, I was fairly confident that I’d be able to get through so I trundled on upwards as the snow got deeper and deeper. After a few hundred yards or so, all previous car tracks had completely disappeared and I was on virgin snow. Up over the top and down the other side there was even more snow down in the valley but there wasn’t a soul around. Initially I pulled over in the first lay by I found, killed the engine and listened. There wasn’t a sound. I waited and waited but no other vehicles appeared - I had the entire busy trunk road to myself. I made photograph after photograph, even lying in the middle of the road on a blind bend pretty certain that I would be ok. It was fantastic and I doubt whether I’ll ever get that opportunity again.
