One of my most popular photographs, this image was taken on a very hot and sweaty afternoon in the grounds of the oldest temple in Luang Prabang, Wat Visounnarath whilst the young monks, who appeared barely in their teens, played cards nearby. One of the first things that hits you in Luang Prabang is the pace of life. It's slow and relaxed. Nobody hurries anywhere. There are so many temples and there are monks everywhere of all ages. They're really friendly and more than happy for you to shoot them, providing you show them appropriate respect. In Laos, many young boys are encouraged to become monks in order to keep them off the streets. The temples are also a place where the poor and needy can go and get hand outs. As a result there are no beggars or malnourished on the streets. It truly is a remarkable place.
I could give you a lengthy bio and artist statement, but who really cares about all that anyway? So here's the concise version: I am a simple man who loves making photographs and spending time with my wife and young kids. I am a Scot living in England. They call me a sassanach. I call myself a Manc. I am fortunate to be able to spend a good amount of time on personal projects, traveling and collaborating with a team of great people. I make my bed in Altrincham, Cheshire and am a sucker for assignments where I have the opportunity to travel, but I just love making photographs anywhere. Cheers Neil
